Skip the airport SIM queue. An eSIM lets you arrive in Thailand with mobile data already active β no physical card, no cash exchange desk. Here's what to buy and how to set it up.

eSIM works on iPhone XS and newer (except iPhone SE 1st gen), Samsung Galaxy S20+, Google Pixel 3+, and many other 2019+ Android flagships. Check your phone settings: Settings β Cellular (iOS) or Network β SIM β Add eSIM.
Purchase from Airalo or Nomad, then install the profile. The eSIM is ready but stays dormant β it only activates when you land and your phone connects to a Thai network.
After purchase you'll receive a QR code by email. On iPhone: Settings β Cellular β Add Plan β scan QR. On Android the path varies by manufacturer. Do this step on WiFi β not on the eSIM itself.
Most travellers keep their home SIM active for calls and use the Thai eSIM for data. Under Cellular (iOS) or Network settings, set the Thai eSIM as your default data line.
To avoid unexpected roaming charges, disable data roaming on your home SIM before you land. The Thai eSIM handles all data.
For most visitors an eSIM is easier β no queue at the airport, no handling a physical card, activate before you land. A physical SIM is useful if you need a local Thai phone number (for OTPs, banking apps, or LINE registration).
AIS has the widest coverage overall, including rural areas and islands. True Move H is strong in cities and popular resort areas. DTAC (now merged with True) covers most tourist destinations. All three are reliable in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Koh Samui.
Most Thailand eSIM plans from Airalo or Nomad are data-only. For voice calls you need a physical SIM or use a VoIP app (WhatsApp, FaceTime, LINE) over the eSIM data connection.
Light use (maps, messaging, some social media): 3β5 GB. Moderate (daily navigation, video calls, streaming): 8β15 GB. Heavy (constant video streaming, hotspot for a laptop): 20 GB+. A 10 GB 30-day plan covers most two-week trips.
Yes β Airalo and Nomad both allow in-app top-ups without reinstalling the eSIM profile. You can also simply buy a new plan from the same provider and it applies to the existing eSIM.
